Sarah, who lives in Australia notices that the length of the flagpole is getting shorter every day when measured at noon. Paul, who lives in Canada, notices that the length of the shadow of the flagpole is getting longer everyday when measured at noon.

They are observing this at the same time but what happens is that Paul is in Canada is in the Northern hemisphere and Sarah is in Australia, in the Southern hemisphere. The position of the Earth, respect to the Sun is different. The tilted axis in Sarah's place makes the shadow seem shorter. In the case of Paul in Canada, the tilted of the axis produces the opposite effect.
