The answer is False. He succeeded Abraham Lincoln after he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play on April 14, 1865. The President died on April 15. A vice-president succeeds a president when a president either dies or this case gets killed and will be sworn in as president to continue his president’s term. Unfortunately, Johnson did not protect the slaves who were freed after the Civil War. He was also at adds with Congress that led to his impeachment.
