Why is Chinese republic a misleading designation for the period between 1912 and 1949 in china

Between 1912 and 1949, they had faced a series of power grabbing with dynasties and nationalist struggles on claiming their country. With so much existing leaders in China, it was a question of the dominant leader in each struggle. Mao Zedong calls these long war as the Protracted People's War.
