Stone's question is indeed right because there was serious threat of the rise of communism in many countries and United States of America feared that it may have its roots in its nation too.

There was a red scare in the nation which existed even after the cold war. Joseph McCarthy who was the senator began a vociferous campaign which acted as a spy organization and checked for the communists residing in America.

He started to make allegations without any proper evidence that supports hiss complaint and this step of McCarthy made many celebrities to lose their jobs as they were improperly alleged that they belonged to communist party.
