Thomas Jefferson believed in an agrarian American. A country where the economy was based almost entirely on agriculture. Jefferson believed that the work shops were to be left in Europe, not America; although he did realize he needed some domestic industry, he still wanted farming to be the main way of earning a living. This ideology was portrayed in Jefferson's book titled Note on the State of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson believed deeply in his agrarian ideals, and he advocated for agrarianism support. This subsequently led to Thomas Jefferson to believing in the importance of humans had on Earth, along with the health of them, and their impact on this land in the long run. He did not oppose advancements in technology; it would contradict him, since he himself had used these industrial advancements in his plantations. He simply didn't want the country to be dominated by the manufacturing industry.

Jefferson opposed large scale industry in America. He wanted that to be worked in Europe. He wanted his country to be based in agrarianism and prefer farming over manufacturing. This fear came mainly because he thought that the industrial revolution was going to turn society into a commercial oligarchy like it had occurred in Britain. This meant going from an agrarian state to one based in manufacturing. The loss of the connection with the land would be lost, along with traditions and moral values. These were Thomas Jefferson's fear of the impact that the economic change would have on his idyllic agrarian life style.
