World War 2 ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. On 8 May 1945, the Allies accepted Germany's surrender, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide. VE Day - Victory in Europe celebrates the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945.

The Allies won: the US, UK. and the Soviet Union.

Approximately twelve million died in the Holocaust, six million Jews and six million others: gypsies, communists, homosexuals, the disabled, Catholics, political opponents of the Nazis, anyone deemed 'unfit' by the Third Reich.

It is believed that an estimated twenty million Russians died because of the war. If you added all of the military and civilian casualties in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, the global death toll could be over 50 million people.

Another result of the war came about when the US dropped two atomic bombs on civilian targets in Japan. This had the dual effect of shortening the war in Asia, and of showing the nuclear capabilities of the US to the USSR. This led to the Cold War between the West and communist Russia.

One particular result was that postwar Japan established a democracy, replacing the Imperial rule.

    Other results:

    Adolf Hitler dead.

    Benito Mussolini dead.
