    The Ottoman empire was a multinational, multilingual empire created by Turkish tribes. It was founded at the end of the 13th century in northwestern Anatolia. The empire spanned 2,273,720 km2 and extended over three continents. The greatest extent was during 1808-1922 under Sultan Mehmed IV.
