The Korean peninsula was split between the US and Russia in 1945 at the 38th parallel line of latitude upon the surrender of Japan. The Russian occupied north had a government installed that was determined to invade and take over the south. That invasion took place on June 25, 1950. The US and UN came to South Korea's defense.

    This is a cause of the Korean War. The effects are that a stalemate developed in which no side could win after China backed North Korea. A truce was signed on July 27, 1953 permanently dividing the peninsula into two hostile neighbors.
