    The word samurai means "one who serves". Samurais were disciplined warriors who served the daimyos by protecting their properties. The daimyos were rich landowners, the powerful Japanese feudal lords. The daimyos were only subordinated to the shogun the feudal rulers that dominated Japan between the 11th and 19th centuries.
