Fundamental Islamic groups viewed Islam as a State religion which had a huge influence over both politics and society.

Ataturk viewed a more western and secular outlook and did not want religion to play any role in both the politics of a Turkish republic nor in the society in general.

He believed that the Turkish people had a lot to learn from the Western European countries and should abandon old customs and traditions.

The fundamentalist, however wanted to ensure a Caliphate and a strong system of Royalty and aristocracy.
