A faction is a group that strongly disagrees with another group. This is a term usually used in politics, to denote a group of people who dissent from the majority and have different opinions and desires than the rest. Usually they have a common purpose that somewhat differs from that of the rest of the political group, which is why they are sort of separated from the rest in the form of a faction.
