Citing specific evidence from Gilgamesh (not from the textbook), explain the role (s) of kingship in ancient Sumerian society. In other words, one might ask, what were the duties of the king or what was a Sumerian king expected to do or what were some of the characteristics of kingship in Ancient Mesopotamia

    The kingship of ancient Mesopotamia has been well explained using the example of a king Gilgamesh. Some of the characteristic of the king Gilgamesh which has been described are his wisdom, his responsible behavior etc. he also acts as a protective warrior, and a builder who is physically stronger and trustworthy. According to the Mesopotamian culture the king is considered as the goddess of war and love. According to the Sumerian proverb the king is considered as the reflection of the god. Hence the responsibilities and duties of the ancient Mesopotamian kings are also higher.

    Some of the main responsibilities of the Mesopotamian kingship are given below:

    •Participating and engaging in the religious rituals, l

    •Managing and ensuring state peace

    •Managing war affairs

    •Preparation of law for the welfare of the people

    •Guiding the administration

    •Execution of justice.
