Although African Americans received their freedom as a result of the civil war, it didn't guarantee them all the rights that should have come with freedom. A study of the Civil Rights Movement that started during the Reconstruction Period following the war, and that continues today shows that many factors hindered blacks from exercising all of their rights. Many rights were still denied to blacks, such as the right to vote, and they were denied access by state and cities laws and ordinances to many freedom that most people take for granted.
