    D) All of the above

    Explanation:

The Prohibition was a big social experiment in the United States. It was focused on banning the production and selling of alcohol. This was not seen fondly by the majority of the population, as most of the people wanted to drink alcohol, many of which on daily basis. Since the alcohol became forbidden by law, the people started to find their own ways of getting it, including bootlegging and illegal distillation, as well as smuggling it. The biggest problem though became the mafia, as this gave it an excellent basis for developing and cashing it enormous amounts of money. The mafia took over the alcohol business, and it quickly became a major player in the country, which in turn resulted in decades of mafia related crime and lot of funds being spent of taking it down.
