Why was the lost battalion position considered to be such a threat to the German army

    Because they were through and behind the main German lines.

    They were like a sword piercing your heart. Outside your body, the sword is pretty mundane, but the second it enters your body and then stays there, it becomes kind of an important problem wouldn't you say?
