The correct answer is - the United States desired to create a buffer zone in Eastern Europe.

The United States had a plan of making part of Eastern Europe a buffer zone between the USSR and the West. This buffer zone though was only a masked term, in fact the United States wanted to influence and get under their wing the Eastern European countries, thus leaving the USSR without allies in Europe, and also surrounding it. Another thing that the United States wanted was to set military basis in this ''buffer zone'', armed with long and medium range missiles, as well as the newest defense mechanisms.

The USSR was not fond of that understandably as it was putting it in a very bad strategic position. They opposed the United States on this issue and rushed to gain control and strengthen their influence in Eastern Europe, the process being very successful too.
