How might physical geography affect the patterns of exploration and settlement of the various European groups coming to the new world?

well since the Europeans coming over the the new world weren't really used to rocky terrain like mountains etc. It would cause them to have to modify there building plans to were it would fit to the rocky terrain. And for the exploring situation it would cause longer and more dangerous quests.
