The rulers of central Mexico in the early 16th century CE were the Aztecs, they had defeated or subjugated the other peoples of the region, who looked at them as opressors and hated them. The Spanish soldiers commanded by Hernán Cortés were not numerous in comparison with the thousands of Aztecs, but Cortés skillfully built a network of alliances with the local opressed tribes first, and then he marched to lay siege to Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital, which ultimately fell into Spanish hands.
