The civilization of Islam drew on Christian and Jewish practices and appealed to the poor/merchants to grow empire. It also gained control of all trade, thus furthering the spread of religion. It also controlled the Med. Basin. In that period, there was tolerance for a tax (provokes conversion of the poor).
