The civil rights movement, which was led by Martin Luther King, was able to make significant progress in combating racial segregation. America after King is a much more homogeneous, monolithic society than in the 1950s. Experts admit that King's activities really created a new reality, but they note that modern America has not become less controversial than it was, but the nature of the contradictions just changed - latent racism replaced institutional racism.
