Generally speaking, the relations that the United States had with France were connected to the political events in America regarding the Federalists and how they weren't fond of the revolutionaries from France. Federalists also passed the Alien and Sedition Acts during the Adams administration because of the relations of the country with the French. It is not unusual to see people saying that it was a violation of the First Amendment.
