Why was the assyrian army a powerful fighting force?

Assyrian soldiers were organized and experts in handling iron weapons. The soldiers were ferocious warriors who stopped at nothing to capture a city. Once captured, the soldiers were burn its buildings and carry the people and goods away. Resisters were punished.
