B - Those who favoured the prohibition believed the government should call for a total halt to the manufacture and sale of liquor - That is why the 18th amendment (1920) in the USA, or the prohibition amendment, declared that it was illegal to produce, transport and sell alcohol. However, the amendment did not make drinking liquor or having it in one's private possession illegal. The prohibition of liquor backfired and lead to an increase in organised crime and law enforcement corruption. Prohibition gave liquor the quality of a 'forbidden fruit' and illegal sales and general consumption increased dramatically. Partly do to its ineffectiveness and do the fact that many came to see the amendment as an abuse of the constitution, it was repealed in 1933 by the 21st amendment.
