    WWI was a major, devastating event, so it's safe to start from the highest numbers: 40 million. In fact, this is the correct answer: it was 22 Million on the allied side and 18 Million on the Axis side.

    Out of this 10 Million people were military personnel and 30 Million people were civilians.
