Menes chose Memphis (Men-nefer) to be the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom because it was located in a strategic position at the mouth of the Nile Delta, facilitating great trading routes and a fertile land. Memphis became quickly full of workshops and factories, thriving as a centre for commerce, trade, and religion.
