The idea of total war existed in all countries involved in World War I. For example, countries used isolationism conscription rationing drafting to determine how much food, rubber, gasoline, and other items each citizen could use during the war. In order to draft more soldiers into the military, many of the nations established a policy of mandatory ration conscription armistice militarism. Some countries also controlled public opinion during the war by using conscription bourgeoisie censorship nationalism to prevent discouraging news from reaching the public.
