One early significant negative effect of the printing press was a large increase in the sale of indulgences by the Church. Indulgences were essentially like certificates created and then sold by the Church to absolve the buyer of his sins. This was an important source of money but it was the labour of peasants that paid for the product. To think that buying a piece of paper to be freed from sins is utter nonsense.

It would also perhaps be improper to think of products of the printing press being negative but it definitely did led in changes and the spread of ideas and technologies. Many of these changes had the result of moving the centre of an economy from agriculture to industrial areas. One example was the employment of water driven devices to do work. The technology to put up these manufacturing processes was passed in printed form and disseminated by travelling vendors. Industrial factories were then set up near streams to benefit of water power. Industries needed employees and they usually moved from farms to these buildings and ceased to be farmers and began to be industrial workers. Thus, resulting in low agriculture supply.
