Somewhere in the mid 1990s, the school officials of Vernonia saw that something was wrong with the students and the drug use was on the rise. Thus in order to combat the drug use, the school district adopted the Student Athlete Drug Policy which required students to partake in random drug tests. James Acton, along with his parents refused to do this which led to the case of Vernonia School District v. Acton.
