The Portuguese set many forts and factories when they explored Africa. They also were able to reach India through the Cape of Good Hope. They also created several naval outposts that linked Lisbon to Nagasaki to several other coast in the world. They also grew wealthy due to business work. The Dutch on the hand, wanted to take part in the spice trade while many Dutch farmers traveled to the interior. They were taxed too much but did not get any protection from African raids and set up their own governments in Swellendam and Graaf-Reinet.
