Pericles influence at the end of the war with Persia. He was wealthy and influential, and during his lifetime, Athens reached its peak, is the most prosperous city of his time. Pericles fought the arbitrariness of the oligarch. After that success, he handed overall power to the National Assembly, which was made up of all the free citizens of Athens. That assembly ruled on state issues, and so Athens formally became a democratic republic. The problem of Athenian democracy lay with the fact that slaves and women could not influence in these democratic movements.
