Recently, political leaders have made efforts to reform the US immigration system, igniting fierce debate. Reform can mean opening the immigration system for a freer flow of people, or restricting immigration to smaller numbers, depending on a person's perspective. Read this argument for making immigration more open and this argument for restricting immigration. In your own words, summarize each side's argument in two to three sentences.

    Restricting immigration:

    The people who are in favor of restricting immigration have a strong argument when it comes to undesired competition in the already scarce job opportunities. They reason that while there is unemployment, the immigration should be restrictive.

    A more open immigration:

    Those who are in favor of a less restricted immigration very often find themselves in a social situation (middle & upper class) where they can emphasize specific arguments like cultural diversity and the immigrant history of the country which has made the U. S. the succesful country of today.

    It can be said that a liberal view on immigration is difficult to sell to people struggling to survive; on the other hand a more conservative or populist approach can easily win a lot of votes in the lower stratum of society.
