The special order number 15 gave African Americans 40 acres to each freed slave or his family and it benefitted 18,000 freed slaves from 400,000 acres confiscated from South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It was enacted on January 16, 1865 near the end of the civil war but was revoked by the successor to the assassinated Abraham Lincoln in the fall of the same year.
