Following the civil war there was a period of extraordinary rapid economic growth in the United States, so that the real gross domestic product multiplied more than seven times. The mainly factors that contributed to this unprecedented growth include high rates of immigration, a rise in the savings rate, and t he expansion and improvement of the nation's transportation and communications network.
