On Aug. 20, 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson approved the Economic Opportunity Act, the framework for the War on Poverty, as part of the approximately 200 laws that were known as the Great Society.

By establishing the Office of Economic Opportunity to lead educational, employment and training plans, they managed to bring down the percentage of Americans living below the poverty line from 20 percent to 12 percent within 10 years.

The president of the Council of Economic Advisers estimates that, including tax credits and benefits, present poverty has dropped by more than a third since the 1960s.
