Even though Democrats made gains in the 1948 election, they still:

They became the majority party in both houses and retained hold on the White House and won the popular vote in all three cases (the sum of the vote of all elections for each house). They also retained control of both houses in 1950. The did lose control of all three in 1952 when Eisenhower become president.
