During the final years of World War II, how did the Allies gain control of the Atlantic Ocean

The way how the Allies gained control of the Atlantic Ocean was through the fact that they were hopping from island to island which enabled them to eventually take a certain amount of land or rather sea back from the Axis powers. This was the main strategy of the allies.
