Gender played a major role in slavery. Masters divided their plantation based on sever factors such as gender and age. Slave owners and masters divided the females and males which established the difference between genders. Tasks were also given to slaves according to their genders. Women had more responsibilities in the sense that they gave birth to children and had to feed them and take care of them. This took time out of the work day and when they were pregnant, the women could not work strenously. Also, women were more likely to work in the household as well as the plantation which put more pressure on women than men. Women had more privileges than men because of the responsibity of children and rearing. However, males were superior than females. The order was White slave owners, female slave owners, male slaves and then female slaves. Even though female slaves got privileges because of their children, they still were at the bottom of the barrel or regarded them that way. Female slaves had a lot of responsibilties such as work on the plantation, produce children and rear them, work in the household i. e. cook, clean and take care of their slave owner’s children.
