Though in her letters Abigail Adams adresses her husband with the issue of women being deprived from education and the impossed tyranny of some men over their wives, and though she asks him to "Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors" (quote, letter Abigail to John, March 31, 1776) in the new Code of Laws, his answer was not as favorauble as expected.

John Adams, member of the Continental Congress, laughed at his wife petition, and said though in theory men are in charge "in Practice you know We are the subjects" (quote, letter John to Abigail, April 14, 1776).

The letters were private, men's mentality was not yet changed, and the fight for women's rights was left to the years to come.
