    Many US ships were torpedoed.

    Explanation:

    In August 1964, Three Vietnamese gunboats approach the USS Maddox and they fired torpedoes at USS Maddox without warning without even unprovoked.

    After few days again the same attack is reported, where an unknown number of Vietnamese gunboats attacked, but two ships were sunk by the USS Maddox.

    In response to the gulf of Ton-kin incident, the United States issues the Gulf of Ton-kin resolution enabling the US involvement in Vietnam to include sending troops into the South without an official declaration of war against the North.
