    Their ability to draw on the wealth of the immediate area around the city. Major towns and cities in the High Middle Ages. sustained their population only through continuous immigration from the countryside.

    well basically mongols were the main problem and also the crusades but they where not so big as mongols ... that is what i remember from my history classes
