Slaves cost more than servants, so initially only the wealthy could invest in slaves.) The first British colonists in Carolina introduced African slavery into the colony in 1670, the year the colony was founded, and Charleston ultimately became the busiest slave port in North America.

Slavery is the practice of owning slaves (workers who are treated poorly and don't make any money, forced labor). It still continues on today so there is no such thing as "did" but I think mostly because it is free labor. Slavery is still practiced all around the world today.
