    The Roman Republic that began in 509 BCE, was an important period during the Roman Empire where political institutions and offices were developed to prevent tyranny. People could participate in the elections of its rulers. The Romans replaced the Emperor with two consuls that were elected to serve a term of one year. And the Romans also created the Roman Senate, to try to balance power in the Republic.
