German nationalism had the most extreme idea of the German extreme right, which claims that the Germans are a nation and promotes the cultural unity of the Germans and entered internal contradictions in the 1940s.

The German nationalism promoted by Herder and Immanuel Kant was romantic in nature, which was based on the principles of collective self-determination, territorial unification and cultural identity, and a political and cultural program to achieve these ends.

However, unlike the German nationalism of 1848 which was based on liberal values, the German nationalism used by supporters of the German Empire was based on Prussian authoritarianism, and was conservative, reactionary, anti-Catholic, antiliberal and anti-socialist in nature. Supporters of the German Empire defended a Germany based on Prussian and Protestant cultural dominance. Thus, this German nationalism was focused on German identity based on the history of the crusaders of the Teutonic Order, which supported a German national identity alleged to be based on Bismarck's ideals that included Teutonic values of willpower, loyalty, honesty and perseverance.
