The use of the term Renaissance refers to the rebirth of European society as a whole after the Dark Ages. During this period, the ideals of the classical period of the Greeks and Romans were rediscovered and lifted up, and thinkers refocused on the arts, literature, philosophy, and other subjects. This caused a great progression forward in the state of society, and unleashed a torrent of new ideas which would drive development in the ensuing centuries.
