    Austria-Hungary controlled many parts of South Eastern Europe where Serbians lived and these Serbians wanted to get their independence and join the independent Serbia which wasn't controlled by the empire. This caused a lot of tension and culminated in the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the beginning of world war 1.
