Which President established the custom of not seeking a third term?

    George Washington established the custom. Ulysses S. Grant was the first president to seek a third term, however he lost. FDR was the first president to seek and win a third term.

    The 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951 made the custom a constitutional requirement
