The Battle of Palmito Ranch took place on May 12 - May 13, 1865 during the American Civil War. Due to the succession of events after the surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9, this battle is almost forgotten. It was the last confrontation from the war that the Southern people won.

At the beginning of 1865 both parties had signed an agreement to stop further hostilities. Most of the units of the North were withdrawn and deployed in the campaigns in the east. The Southern people focused their attention on protecting their ports to safeguard the export of cotton and the import of goods. They were supported in this by the Mexicans who had a lucrative trade in smuggling all kinds of goods.

Whatever the specific reason may have been, it is certain that an expedition was organized by Theodore H. Barrett to attack the outposts of the Rebels.

Barret ordered Lieutenant Colonel David Branson to attack the Brazos Santiago depot at Fort Brown, led by Major John "Rip" Ford.

The southern camp was successfully attacked, also because the Southern people thought the hostilities had ceased. The units under Branson were driven back after this initial success by a new enemy unit that appeared on the scene. The next day the Northern people attacked again and again, but eventually had to withdraw to their own base.

117 (4 killed, 12 injured, 101 captured) victims were counted among the Northern units. The Southern people regretted a few dozen wounded. Just like the First Battle of Bull Run, this very last battle was recorded as a Southern victory. The formal surrender of the Southern regiments in Texas was signed on May 26, 1865.
