Write a short excerpt from the Gettysburg address that shows how Lincoln chose words to connect his speech to the declaration of independence. Then explain why you think he wanted to connect his address to the declaration.

    "87 years ago, our parents gave birth on this continent to a new nation, conceived in Liberty and consecrated to the principle that all men are born equal.

    We are currently engaged in a great civil war, testing whether this Nation, or any other so conceived and consecrated, can last. Here we are on a great battlefield of that war. "

    In the excerpt from the Gettysburg address shown above, we can see that Lincoln used words to relate his speech to the declaration of independence. He did this to show how the war distorted the reason why Americans struggled to make America an independent and free nation.

    He says that the country was born with the concept that freedom would always be a priority and a right for every American citizen, in addition, he says that the country was established on the premise that all men are equal. However, all of this is distorted when the Americans are thrown into a war against themselves, killing themselves as if they are inferior to each other.
