In the European Commercial Revolution, merchants started getting wealthy and establishing trading companies in colonies which were almost independent from the kingdoms or empires they came form. Some even got their own colonies where they ruled as parts of paying back debts that kings had owed them. This economic freedom enabled them to become even more powerful than nobles.

In the industrial revolution, economic freedom allowed rich people to open factories and employ people. They could invest the money to improve their businesses and didn't have to worry about the government. It was a free enterprise system because anyone could open a company or a factory and they competed which meant that there was always job opportunities for workers.

20th century free market economies were better than command economies because there was freedom to invest in what you wanted, and freedom to produce what you wanted. This was important because when a business endeavor fails in a command economy, all the people suffer since the companies are publicly owed, while a free market economy's business failures harm the company and its owner, and the workers working there, but it doesn't harm the government and people directly.
