By 1972 many states had outlawed gender discrimination in hiring. Congress passed an equal rights amendment (ERA) that barred discrimination on the basis of sex. Working women's earnings was still lower than men and the workplace remained gender segregated. Women still concentrated on fields like nursing, teaching, sales, and secretarial work, but more women began to enter the ranks of management. By the early 1990's the legal and medical professions were nearly 20% female, while growing ranks of female medical students and law students promised even more dramatic changes in the future.
